Another Two Cents

I believe Nancy has done irreparable harm to her tenure at UC and should seek another school to administrate. No matter how this plays out I can't see her not being dogged the rest of her time here. Why would you want to be booed any time you go out in public the rest of your career here. I doubt if she is a baseball fan so I can't think we will run into here at GABP. But at the Broadway series, you bet. There is bound to be some upset booster who will say something to her in public at intermission. I would not want to face that every time I went to Kroger.
As much as I love UC and UC sports let's face the facts. We do not have a sports program that can withstand a major hit. I agree with the premise that many people buy football tickets because they have to get basketball tickets. If enough of those buyers get mad enough and drop their bball tickets they will be gone for football also. Being in the BEast will help. But Seton Hall has not turned the world on being in the BE. Georgetown lost their icon and where have they been?
What could have been the glory years for UC sports in the future now looks dismal to me. I saw a football team that would struggle for a few years then take off. I saw a ladies bball team that would improve rapidly. I saw a men's bball team that would now be able to recruit toe-to-toe with the best and be on a stage that we could have only have dreamed about before Huggs. I saw a baseball team that would become competitive and bring fans to campus in the spring. I saw a rapidly improving campus we could all be proud of with an improving Calhoun street that we could all hold our heads high over.
Instead this lady gets lucky with one bball hire at her old school and she thinks it is easy to hire a coach. In fact that coach has a lucky run in the tournament and she thinks it is easy to do. She must have the golden touch. How many times have we seen a coach have a lucky year and turn it into a top job only to fail. Stan Heath, Mike Davis and Steve Lavin come to mind.
I believe there is a portion of us who would have accepted Huggins being dismissed after the DUI. There is also a portion who would have accepted it right after this past year ended. But the administration has lost all of us with the way this has been handled.
All of us who are graduates of UC want to see UC excel academically. I thought many of the initiatives Z instituted sounded great. Anyone who knows individual schools academic reputations know U of Michigan and U of Miami have excellent schools. Did anyone who knows that think any less of those schools when the Fab Five turned out to be cheats or Miami was having all of their problems? I know I didn't. I think I am smart enough to divorce the two. Not that I am saying let the bball team run wild as long as they win. There are too many examples of the players being loyal to Huggs and who have appeared to turn their lives around for me to dismiss it has luck. I remember on senior night the year Mike Harris was playing in his last home game and a relative of his was interviewed on the radio. To paraphrase he said I gave Coach Huggins a boy and he gave me back a man. I don't know why I was amazed but to hear how Whaley and Huggs stay in touch to this day shows that Huggs does not look at these guys as just players to help him win. How Huggs was helping Bright land at a Jr. college. He could have easily thought Bright was killing him in the school of public opinion and walked away from him. But he was still trying to help him. That is the kind of person I want as a friend. That is the kind of person I would want my son to be coached by.
I think some person in an ivory tower who has worked in academia might have trouble understanding that. They are more worried about their reputation than the truth.
The fact that we think someone is getting screwed and want to do something about it leads members of the BOT to call us names. Well let's see who has more integrity. When Huggs got busted for DUI he stood up and took it like a man. Cox blows well over the legal limit but still maintains his innocence. Which lacks integrity? I can't think of a parallel on the tax evasion scheme Cox is into that I could equate with Huggs so fill in your own example.
Sorry for the rant but this just sickens me.
Just call me a Bearcat with a heavy heart.
