07/31/08: "Adreian Payne sets his 6-foot-9 frame into a folding chair outside the Jefferson High School gym as Broncos coach Art Winston passes on the newest stack of mail. The letters contain return addresses from Iowa, Minnesota, Kentucky and Dayton — in this batch, at least. The Jefferson star uses one of his long fingers to flip open the recruiting letter from the University of Dayton. He unfolds it. Under a picture of a full UD Arena, it tells Payne that ESPN's Top 5 College Basketball Towns, named by one commentator, are Dayton, Durham, Lawrence, Stillwater, Albuquerque. Under that, in red ink, it reads, "Dayton loves its basketball — J.B."

This letter from UD assistant Jon Borovich is one of mountains Payne has received in the Jefferson office since college coaches noticed that the incoming junior has the size, athletic ability and basketball skills to be one of the top players in his class nationally.

Recently, Rivals.com ranked Payne the 14th-best recruit in the Class of 2010, which means the next two seasons will include plenty of phone calls and letters like this as the Flyers and some of the country's top basketball programs try to add Payne to their rosters. "You have to improve every year, because if you don't they'll think, 'What is he doing there? Is he doing his work? Is he slacking off?' " Payne said. "A lot of people get the big head and don't focus on their game because they think they're already there. I'm not there yet." - Dayton Daily News

07/25/08: " While Sullinger is a sure bet to do damage in every game (and just about on every touch), his All Ohio Red teammate Payne may have more long-term potential, as his length, quickness, athleticism, shotblocking and shooting touch make him a tough matchup on both ends." - Slam Magazine

07/14/08: "Adreian Payne, the Jefferson High School big man considered one of the country's most-developing players, is No. 14 on the list. And, he seems to only be helping his stock. Last week, Payne was impressive in the Adidas It Takes 5ive Tournament in Cincinnati playing for his stacked All-Ohio Red AAU team. Earlier today, I talked with Jefferson coach Art Winston about Payne, and Winston said schools ranging from Georgetown and Kentucky to West Virginia and Florida have called with interest. Last month, Payne played well in the Nike Hoop Jamboree in St. Louis and got an even better review from Rivals: - The lengthy Payne (7-foot-4 reach and 9-foot reach) made a statement from the get go by knocking down midrange jumpers, snagging rebounds and swatting shots anywhere in his vicinity. Still very much a work in progress, Payne likely has as much upside as any prospect in the camp. - " - Dayton Daily News, with Rivals

07/08/08: Someone told me that Jared Sullinger is ranked higher than Adreian Payne. But not today. Payne was an overall better prospect based on what I saw today. Has a quick second jump and even defended a guard successfully on the perimeter on a switch off. It was amazing to watch someone 6'9" slide toward the baseline with a guard so effortlessly. - Mike Ryan

02/26/08: 6-8, 210-pound Dayton Jefferson sophomore basketball star Adreian Payne. I'm watching his game right now against Lockland, in the D-IV districts at UD Arena. Payne is very "long," as they say in recruit-speak nowadays. Long arms, long legs, a bit slender. Runs the court well, and has already swatted away a couple of shots here tonight." - Enquirer, Tom Groeschen

01/22/08: "Sophomore center Adreian Payne put up 20 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks" in a loss to Harmony's B team at Flyin To The Hoop.
