Corie Blount, 91-93
Played PF for the Bearcats10/01/04: The Toronto Raptors no longer list Corie Blount on their roster.
03/12/04: The Toronto Raptors signed F Corie Blount.
03/03/04: "Despite riding a two-game winning streak, Bulls players were not a happy group Tuesday as they flew to New Orleans for their game tonight against the Hornets. Corie Blount, the most popular player on the team, was waived to make room for Paul Shirley, who will be signed to a 10-day contract today. The 6-10 Shirley, who was playing for the Kansas City Knights of the American Basketball Association, won't be available tonight. "I enjoyed playing for [Scott] Skiles," Blount said. "But I'm disappointed they felt this was the right way to go."
Players were shocked at the move, and Blount's camp was disappointed in the timing. If it happened a day earlier, Blount could have been picked up by a team headed to the playoffs. Monday was the deadline for postseason rosters. "The timing is unfortunate," Skiles admitted. "It's a crummy business sometimes."
The timing likely was an oversight as operations chief John Paxson was returning from a scouting trip in Europe on Monday. Blount was expendable because his contract expires after this season, and the Bulls have several post players. "I didn't take pleasure in doing this," Paxson said. "Corie's been professional and has played very well for us. "If we were in the [playoff] position we thought we'd be early in the year, we wouldn't have done this. But I want to be able over the next seven weeks to look at some guys who may get waived or go down to the NBDL. I want to have some options with the roster.''
The 6-10 Blount, in his 11th season, averaged 4.5 points and 4.5 rebounds and shot 47.1 percent in 46 games for the Bulls. He was on the injured list with a sprained right knee, so if he does sign with another team, he'll be at least a week away from being healthy. The Toronto Raptors were one of many teams to call Blount's agent, Mark Bartelstein, to inquire about his services.
The Bulls will put someone else on the injured list to make room for Shirley on the active roster. "[Blount] told me in the training room that he had a meeting with Coach," Kirk Hinrich said. "I don't think he expected this. Corie's a good friend of mine. I don't like that kind of stuff. I'm used to it being a lot different. If he's on your team, he's on your team, especially for a guy like Corie. Everybody loves him."
Look for some Bulls to pay homage to Blount by altering something on their uniform.
02/28/04: The Chicago Bulls placed forward Corie Blount on the injured list with a left knee sprain.
07/30/03: "John Paxson finalized his roster by signing Corie Blount to a two-year, $3.4 million contract. Only the first year is guaranteed; the Bulls have the option for the second year." - ESPN.com

"Corie got off to a bit of a slow start for us because he was injured. What I wanted the most from Corie this year as a player was for him to be a good defender. I also wanted him to really work with Eddy and Tyson to teach them how to play and I thought, for the most part, that he did that. He did a good job, he was consistent and I thought he had a really good year." - Coach Bill Cartwright
10/10/02: "Blount, the Bulls’ 1993 first round draft pick (25th overall), returns to Chicago after spending the last seven years with five different teams. "Corie Blount is a guy who can play either the four or the five," Cartwright said. "We need him the most for his experience. It’s been really interesting to have known him [at the start of his career] and knowing him now. It is almost as if you are talking about two completely different people. It’s very remarkable, because now he has a great understanding of what it takes to be a pro. He’s worked very hard to get to the point he’s at today and I hope he can pass some of that along to the other guys." Last season with the Philadelphia 76ers Blount combined 3.6 ppg with 5.1 rpg in 72 appearances which included 21 starts. In his first two seasons with the Bulls (1993-94 and 1994-95), Blount, entering his 10th career season, averaged 3.25 ppg and 3.2 rpg in 11.7 mpg." - NBA.com/Chicago
07/30/02: "The Bulls reached into their past for their first free-agent addition this summer, signing forward Corie Blount to a one-year contract worth $1.4 million. Blount, 33, is a 1993 first-round pick of the Bulls who spent two seasons with the team before being traded to the Lakers for cash.
General manager Jerry Krause refused to comment on the deal, expected to be announced Wednesday pending results of a physical that Blount took Tuesday in Chicago. But Blount sounded pleased before flying out of Chicago on Tuesday evening. "I feel comfortable here," he said. "I've always enjoyed playing here."
A veteran of six teams in nine seasons, Blount played in a career-high 72 games last season with Philadelphia. He made 21 starts and averaged 3.6 points and 5.1 rebounds.
The 6-foot-10-inch, 242-pounder is an active and able defender who has consistently ranked well in rebounds per minute. Blount was the 76ers' fourth-leading rebounder despite playing just 19.8 minutes per game. "This isn't just the Bulls signing some veteran who will go in and give advice," said Mark Bartelstein, Blount's Chicago-based agent. "He's going in to play." - Chicago Tribune
Who is the only NBA player to play on the same teams as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Shaquille O'Neal ? - Corie Blount
(now THAT is something for Corie to tell the grandkids !)
12/15/01: "This former California Community College Co-Player of the Year led Rancho Santiago College to a 35-2 record in 1991, then was a starter for Cincinnati's Final Four and Elite Eight teams the next two seasons. He was a first-round pick in the NBA draft and has played key roles on playoff teams for the Bulls and Lakers. He established personal career highs with 6.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game after joining the Golden State Warriors last season. Blount opens the 2001-02 season as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers" - COA Sports
10/26/01: "Blount, an eight-year NBA veteran, has played for five different teams, including Chicago (1993-95), L.A. Lakers (1995-98), Cleveland (1999), Phoenix (1999-01), and Golden State (2001). The 6-foot-10, 242-pounder has posted career averages of 3.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in 14.4 minutes per game. Last season, he registered career-highs in points (4.6), rebounds (5.9), and minutes (19.2) in 68 games played for the Warriors. The Bulls drafted him with the 25th overall selection in the first round in 1993. In this year's preseason, Blount has played in four games, averaging 3.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in 11.5 minutes per game." - NBA.com
10/25/01: Corie was traded to the Sixers today in a three team deal. It looks to be a contract/accounting based move in sending Corie to Philly.
02/26/01: Corie has now played in 12 games as a Warrior and has averaged double digit minutes (at least 13 every game), 5 ppg and 8 rpg. He had double doubles in his two most recent games ! - Dean Richmond and Mike Ryan
1/30/01: "I think I came back too soon from leg surgery and I fell into a funk with Scott Skiles," Blount said referring to the Phoenix coach. "I think he carried a grudge. I never could figure him out. I'd play 20 minutes one game and none the next." - San Jose Mercury News
01/26/01: "The Phoenix Suns acquired guard Vinny Del Negro from the Golden State Warriors on Friday in exchange for reserves Corie Blount, Paul McPherson and 6-9 Ruben Garces. Del Negro's ankle and Blount's troublesome knees must be approved by their respective teams' doctors. Blount, in his second season with the Suns, averaged 1.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in 30 games while moving in and out of coach Scott Skiles' doghouse. But the Warriors, the league's worst defensive team, can use the defensive acumen Blount displayed during his 3 1/2 seasons with the Lakers. Fitzsimmons said Blount was under contract to the Suns through this season with a player option for next year, but Blount waived his option to make the trade work. The NBA won't allow veterans on one-year contracts to be traded. Golden State is Blount's fifth team in eight seasons." - Assoc Press
01/26/01: "Blount had a player option on his contract after this season but agreed to waive it and have next season guaranteed. Blount, 6-10, will give the Warriors' additional depth on their front line, particularly with Erick Dampier and Danny Fortson still out with injuries." - Contra Costa News
09/27/00: "The Phoenix Suns announced today that Corie Blount underwent successful arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday afternoon. New team physician Thomas Carter performed the operation on Blount's left knee. Carter repaired arthritic changes in the left knee cap and gave Corie an arthroscopic debridement. Blount will miss 4-6 weeks. Last year, Corie had surgery on the same knee, but it was to repair torn and lost cartilage. He opened the regular season on the injured list and didn't return to the active roster until January 11th, missing the first 32 games." - Suns BackCourt

Terry and Corie took a (recruiting) visit to UC at the same time and we all went out to dinner with Mo one night at The Waterfront restaurant. That’s when the movie "A Rage In Harlem" was being filmed in Cincinnati, and while we were sitting there at our table, a number of people associated with it walked in, including Danny Glover, Robin Givens and Forest Whitaker. They walked by our table and said hello, same as they did with everyone, but Terry was really impressed. "I've been in LA my whole life", he said "and I've never had dinner with Robin Givens". (then some Reds players walked in. They were currently in the playoffs)
"There's no comedians in here", Terry said.
"Ok, so if there's a comedian in here, that would sell you (on committing to Cincinnati) ?", Huggins said.
"Yeah, if a comedian walks in here, I'm coming to Cincinnati".
As they we leaving, Ray Combs walked in. He was a nationally known comedian and all television all the time as host of "The Family Feud". Terry committed.
Corie was 6-4 and he was working at KMart after finishing HS. But he grew and he was recruited to Juco. Both Anthony Buford and Corie Blount ended up selling Erik Martin on attending UC. Buford had roomed with Martin at the 5Star Camp for two weeks. Corie was Erik's teammate at Juco. (I think it is funny that Corie used to work at KMart years ago. And now on a road trip to play the NJ Nets, he'll have to defend KMart, aka - Kenyon. - Mike Ryan)
